Sage Sankara says Atman (the seer) in itself’ is alone permanent, the seen is opposed to it (ie., transient) – such a settled conviction is truly known as discrimination.+

Sage Sankara says: ~ “What is accepted without a proper inquiry will not lead a person to the final goal. On the contrary, such acceptance will result only in evil, something which is detrimental to our spiritual progress.
Sage Sankara says:~ VC-47- All the effects of ignorance, root, and branch, are burnt down by the fire of knowledge, which arises from discrimination between these two—the Self and the non-Self.
Until you think you are an individual separate from the world and the world existed prior to you and you are born in it afterward ignorance will prevail as a reality. Till ignorance is there the universe prevails as reality.
Sage  Sankara says: ~ “The exercise in discrimination between real and unreal and renunciation of the false is real meditation, then why you are indulging in other types of meditation.
Perfect understanding and realization of ‘what is what’ leads to Self-awareness. By holding onto theories one remains in the realm of duality. You have to mentally go on dropping what is not the truth through deeper Self-search. Finally when you become aware of the fact that, your ego, your body, and the world are one in essence then there is Self-awareness in the midst of dualistic illusion or Maya.

Sage Sankara says in Aparoksh Anubhuti: ~

A. A 5~ Atman (the seer) in itself’ is alone permanent, the seen is opposed to it (ie., transient) – such a settled conviction is truly known as discrimination.

A.A 19. Atman is all consciousness and holy, the body is all flesh and impure; and yet, etc.,

A.A 45. There exists no other material cause of this phenomenal universe except Brahman. Hence this whole universe is but Brahman and nothing else.

A.A 46. From such declaration (of the Shruti) as “All this is Atman”, it follows that the idea of the pervaded and the pervading is illusory. This supreme truth being realized, where is the room for any distinction between the cause and the effect?

A.A 47. Certainly, the Shruti has directly denied manifoldness in Brahman. The non-dual cause being an established fact, how could the phenomenal universe be different from It?

A.A 48. Moreover, the Shruti has condemned (the belief in variety) in the words, “The person who”, being deceived by Maya, “sees variety in this (Brahman), goes from death to death”.

A.A 49. Inasmuch as all beings are born of Brahman, the supreme Atman, they must be understood to be verily Brahman.

A.A 50. The Shruti has clearly declared that Brahman alone is the substratum of all varieties of names, forms, and actions.

A.A 51. Just as a thing made of gold ever has the nature of gold, so also a being born of Brahman has always the nature of Brahman.

A.A 53. When duality appears through ignorance, one sees another; but when everything becomes identified with the Atman, one does not perceive another even in the least.

A.A 54. In that state when one realizes all as identified with the Atman, there arises neither delusion nor sorrow, in a consequence of the absence of duality.

A.A 55. The Shruti in the form of the Brihadaranyaka has declared that this Atman, which is the ‘Self’ of all, is verily Brahman.

A.A 56. This world, though an object of our daily experience and serving all practical purposes, is, like the dream world, of the nature of non-existence, inasmuch as it is contradicted the next moment.

A.A 57. The dream (experience) is unreal in waking, whereas the waking (experience) is absent in the dream. Both, however, are non-existent in deep sleep which, again, is not experienced in either.

A.A 58. Thus all three states are unreal inasmuch as they are the creation of the three Gunas; but their witness (the reality behind them) is, beyond all Gunas, eternal, one, and is Consciousness itself.

A.A 59. Just as (after the illusion has gone) one is no more deluded to see a jar in earth or silver in the nacre, so does one no more see Jiva in Brahman when the latter is realized (as one’s own ‘Self’).

A.A 68. Atman, though ever pure (to a wise man), always appears to be impure (to an ignorant one), just as a rope always appears in two different ways to a knowing person and an ignorant one.

A.A- 87. Thus through ignorance arises in Atman the delusion of the body, which, again, through ‘Self’-realization, disappears in the supreme Atman.

A.A 88. When the whole universe, movable and immovable, is known to be Atman, and thus the existence of everything else is negated, where is then any room to say that the body is Atman?

A.A 96. The real nature of the rope being known, the appearance of the snake no longer persists; so the substratum being known, the phenomenal world disappears completely.

A.A 98. “And all the actions of a man perish when he realizes that (Atman) which is both the higher and the lower”. Here the clear use of the plural by the Shruti is to negate Prarabdha as well.

A.A 99. If the ignorant still arbitrarily maintain this, they will not only involve themselves in two absurdities but will also run the risk of forgoing the Vedantic conclusion. So one should accept those Shrutis alone from which proceeds true knowledge. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar

Sage Sankara also said the study of Upanishad was neither indispensable nor a necessary prerequisite for attaining the human goal, the moksha.+

Sage Sankara strongly advocated the study of Upanishads, and at the same time cautioned that the study of Upanishads alone would not lead to moksha. In matters such as spiritual attainment, one’s own realization was the sole authority and it cannot be disputed
Sage Sankara also said the study of Upanishad was neither indispensable nor a necessary prerequisite for attaining the human goal, the moksha.
Sage Sankara pointed out; even those who were outside the Upanishad fold were as eligible for moksha as those within the fold were. He declared that all beings are Brahman, and therefore the question of discrimination did not arise. All that one was required to do was to get rid of ignorance (Avidya or duality).
Scriptures are being added from time to time by different interpreters with different interpretations. This process will go on. There is the final authority among them? One contradicts the other: duality reigns supreme.

The scriptural citation may be quoted in pursuit of truth as authoritative only after deeper verification gets uncontradictable truth. If one quotes the scriptures without deeper verification then it is scholasticism or punditry.

The study of the Scriptures is useless to realize the ‘Self’ hidden by the dualistic illusion of Maya.

Maya or dualistic illusion is present in the form of the ‘I’. The ‘I’ is present in the form of the mind. The mind is present in the form of the universe. The universe appears as a waking or dream (duality) and disappears as deep sleep (non-duality).  Maya or illusion is product ignorance.

Due to ignorance, the duality is experienced as reality. There is no duality in the essence of the mind. The essence is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.   The consciousness alone is real and all else is unreal. Thus, consciousness is second to none. Consciousness is the ultimate truth or Brahman.

Sage Sankara indicates that scriptural studies are useless in the pursuit of truth, therefore, it is no use of indulging in scriptural studies and wasting their precious time and life.

Even   Upanishads also confirm this:~

Katha Upanishad: ~ This Ataman cannot be attained by the study of the Vedas, or by intelligence, nor by much hearing of sacred books. It is attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Atman reveals Its own form. (Ch.-II -23-P-20)

Mundaka Upanishad:-This Ataman cannot be attained through the study of the Vedas, nor intelligence, nor through much learning. He who chooses Ataman—by him alone is Atman attained. It is Ataman that reveals to the seeker Its true nature.   (3-page -70 Upanishads Nikilanada)

The scriptures indicate that Atman is Brahman, and Brahman is the ultimate truth. Therefore, the Soul, which is in the form of consciousness, is the ultimate truth.

Thus, realizing the ultimate truth is the prime goal.   A well-directed inquiry, analysis, and reasoning will lead one to his non-dual destination.

The scriptures are filled just with information. By accumulating information one cannot attain wisdom.  No matter how much one knows, wisdom is not attained. One can go on gathering more and more knowledge, learn the scriptures by heart, become parrots, memorize each and every sutra or stanza, let the complete Vedas be imprinted in his memory -- but still, the wisdom will not dawn.

Remember:~

People think that mastering scriptural knowledge is wisdom.  Pundits and religious Gurus call scriptural knowledge as wisdom. Scriptural knowledge binds one instead thus it is not liberation.  Wisdom is that which liberates one from experiencing the duality as reality.

That is why Sage Sankara, indicated in Bhaja Govindam says: ~ [Jnana Viheena Sarva Mathena Bajathi na Muktim janma Shatena- one without knowledge does not obtain liberation even in a hundred births, no matter which religious faith he follows.

Sage Sankara says: - VC- 58. Loud speech consisting of a shower of words, the skill in expounding the Scriptures, and likewise erudition - these merely bring on a little personal enjoyment to the scholar but are no good for Liberation.

59. The study of the Scriptures is useless so long as the highest Truth is unknown, and it is equally useless when the highest Truth has already been known.

 60. The Scriptures consisting of many words are a dense forest that merely causes the mind to ramble. Hence men of wisdom should earnestly set about knowing the true nature of the ‘Self’.

61. For one who has been bitten by the serpent of Ignorance, the only remedy is the knowledge of Brahman. Of what avail are the Vedas and (other) Scriptures, Mantras (sacred formulae), and medicines to such a one?

62. A disease does not leave off if one simply utters the name of the medicine, without taking it; (similarly) without direct realization one cannot be liberated by the mere utterance of the word Brahman.

63. Without causing the objective universe to vanish and without knowing the truth of the ‘Self’, how is one to achieve Liberation by the mere utterance of the word Brahman? — It would result merely in an effort of speech.

64. Without killing one’s enemies and possessing oneself’ of the splendor of the entire surrounding region, one cannot claim to be an emperor by merely saying, ‘I am an emperor’.

65. As a treasure hidden underground requires (for its extraction) competent instruction, excavation, the removal of stones and other such things lying above it, and (finally) grasping, but never comes out by being (merely) called out by name, so the transparent truth of the ‘Self’, which is hidden by Maya and its effects, is to be attained through the instructions of a knower of Brahman, followed by reflection, meditation and so forth, but not through perverted arguments.

66. Therefore the wise should, as in the case of disease and the like, personally strive by all the means in their power to be free from the bondage of repeated births and deaths.

Sage Sankara clearly indicated that: - yoga, intellectualism, and scriptural mastery are not the means to Self-knowledge.  But by the realization of one's identity with consciousness, which is the ultimate truth or Brahman, freedom from experiencing the illusion as reality is possible, and by no other means.

Then there is no need for the scriptures, religion, and idea of God. One has to be more rational to realize the Advaitic truth, which is the ultimate truth or scientific truth. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar

It is time to investigate what God supposed to be according to religious books.+

Millions of people in the world every day prayed to their God of their belief to protect them but the people who don’t believe other people's ideas of God mercilessly kill them so the prayers remained unheard of those who prayed for protection.

There is no invisible power of God is working to save mankind. There are the visible tangible signs in the world of such power? There are no signs of benefit to humankind in this world. The wars, violence terrorism calamities epidemics are happening in spite of most people in the world are praying to their God of their belief. There is no proof that by praying to God such as wars, violence terrorism calamities epidemics will stop happening. There cannot be any proof must show that the wars, violence terrorism calamities epidemics can be stopped by praying to God. People indulge in wars, violence, and terrorism in the name of God and their religion. How God of one religion can protect the people belong to another religion.

So, it is time to investigate what God supposed to be according to religious books.

Holding the belief in personal Gods keeps the Soul, the Self permanently in ignorance. The ignorance keeps the Soul permanently in the prison of dualistic illusion. Illusion makes the Soul remain in the domain of the form, time, and space. In the domain of the form, time and space the experience of the birth, life, death, and the world is experienced as reality.
If the seeker wants to realize the truth, then he has to discard all the religious beliefs and yogic practices and scriptural studies. Nothing is needed in pursuit of truth other than intense urge and receptivity to realize the truth, which is beyond the form, time and space.
That is why Sage Sankara: ~ VC Let erudite scholars quote all the Scripture, let Gods be invoked through sacrifices, let elaborate rituals be performed, let personal Gods be propitiated---yet, without the realization of one‘s identity with the Self, there shall be no liberation for the individual, not even in the lifetimes of a hundred Brahmas put together (verses-6)
Sage Sankara said: ~ -Neither by the practice of yoga nor philosophy, nor by good works nor by learning, does liberation come, but only through the realization that Atman and Brahman are one in no other way. (1) Vivekachoodamani v 56, pg~25
Sage Sankara’s wisdom is nothing to do with religion and yoga. There are two kinds of audiences - the ordinary ones who desire the transitory heaven and other pleasures obtained as a result of ritual sacrifices, and the more advanced seeker who seeks to know the truth beyond the form, time and space. The religion and yoga are meant for the first audience, to help lead its followers along the way. The Sage Sankara’s Advaitic wisdom, with its emphasis on the Advaitic wisdom, is meant for those who wish to go beyond such transient pleasures.
First, you must know what God is supposed to be.
There is a clear-cut idea in the scriptures, what supposed to be God. And what not to worship in place of God then why worship the belief of God, which not God.
That is why Lord Krishna says Ch ~V: ~ Those who know the Self in truth.". The last two words (tattvataha) are usually ignored by pundits, but they make all the difference between the ordinary concept of God and the truth about God.
Bhagavad Gita: ~ Brahmano hi pratisthaham ~ Brahman (God in truth) is considered the all-pervading consciousness, which is the basis of all the animate and inanimate entities and material. (14.27)
When Bhagavad Gita says, God is considered the all-pervading consciousness (Spirit) which is the basis of all the animate and inanimate entities and material then nothing has to be accepted as God other than consciousness.
Rig Veda: ~ 'Prajnanam Brahma'- Consciousness is the ultimate reality or Brahman or God in truth.

God in truth is the Atman, the Self. Atman is present in the form of consciousness.

Do not accept any other God other than Atman not worship other than Atman.

Let these words be inscribed in your subconscious.

Nothing is real but God. Nothing Matters but love for God in truth. God in truth is everywhere and in everything.

God in truth is hidden by the illusory universe. God in truth alone is and all else is an illusion.

Rig-Veda 1-164-46 and Y.V 32-1 clearly mention that God is “One”.

Rig Veda says God is ‘ONE’ and God is Atman, then why believe and worship in place of the real God.
Rig Veda: ~ The Atman is the cause; Atman is the support of all that exists in this universe. May ye never turn away from the Atman, the Self. May ye never accept another God in place of the Atman nor worship other than the Atman?" (10:48, 5)
Yajurveda – chapter- 32:~  God is  Supreme Spirit has no ‘Pratima’ (idol) or material shape. God cannot be seen directly by anyone. God pervades all beings and all directions. Thus, Idolatry does not find any support from the Vedas.
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad: ~ Brahman (God in truth) is in the form of the Athma, and it is indeed Athma itself.
People, who worship the belief of God, are hallucinating that they become one with such God.
Vedas itself says: May ye never accept another God in place of the Atman nor worship other than the Atman? Thus, to know the real God Self-realization is necessary. Self-realization is God-realization. Self-realization itself is real worship.

Remember:~

Bible says: ~ “God is a Spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)

The dualistic worship of "God” is only for the ignorant populace. The God in truth is only Atman, the innermost Self. In reality, there is no duality, no differentiation. Only Atman exists.

Brihad Upanishad: ~ “If you think there is another entity, whether man or God there is no truth."

Chandogya Upanishad: ~ Sarvam khalvidam brahma ~ All this (universe) is verily Brahman (God). By following back all of the relative appearances in the world, we eventually return to that from which it is all manifest – the non-dual reality.

Sage  Sankara’s Supreme Brahman (God in truth) is impersonal, Nirguna (without Gunas or attributes), Nirakara (formless), Nirvisesha (without special characteristics), immutable, eternal, and Akarta (non-agent)
It is above all needs and desires. It is always the Witnessing Subject. It can never become an object as it is beyond the reach of the senses. Brahman is non-dual, one without a second. It has no other beside it. It is destitute of difference, either external or internal. Brahman cannot be described because the description implies the distinction. Brahman cannot be distinguished from any other than It. In Brahman, there is not a distinction between substance and attribute. Sat-Chit-Ananda constitutes the very essence or Svarupa of Brahman and not just Its attributes. The Nirguna Brahman of Sage Sankara is impersonal.

God is not physical. God is present in the form of the Spirit. The Spirit is the cause of the world and the Spirit itself is uncaused.

Bhagavad Gita Chapter:~ All those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires, they worship many Gods. (7- Verse -20)

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad:~ "He who worships the deities as entities entirely separate from the Self does not know the truth. For the Gods, he is like a pasu (beast)". (1. 4. 10)

From the standpoint of the Spirit, the form, time, space, and name are merely an illusion. The spirit alone is real and all else is an illusion. In reality, the Spirit (God in truth) and matter (the world in which we exist) are one.

Belief is not proof. Thus, whatever propagated by religion is not proof According to their own doctrine God is Spirit but they worship humanized God. First, one must know what is God is in truth.

All the religious worship and prayers to God are meant for the ignorant populace. One must know the difference between the ordinary concept of God and the truth about God. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar

This universe is nothing but the Soul, which is present in the form of the consciousness.+

Sage Sankara: ~ "VC~ if the universe is true, let it then be perceived in the state of deep sleep also. As it is not at all perceived, it must be unreal and false like dreams.

This universe is nothing but the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.  From the Soul, the universe appears, and when the universe disappears as consciousness, consciousness still remains without any division of form, time, and space.

Ashtavakra Gita: ~ “The universe rises from the Soul, the innermost “Self’ like bubbles from the sea. Thus know the ‘Self’ to be “One” and in this way enter into the state of dissolution."

To enable the seeker to steer clear of any possible doubt, the seeker should take the Atmic path.  The ‘I’ is the clue and study the nature of the ‘I’ and discover its source.

The ‘“Self’’ is not within you but the ‘“Self’’ is hidden in the world in which you exist. The one which is born, lives, and dies is not the ‘“Self’’ because the ‘“Self’’ is the Soul, which is the ever-formless, timeless, and spaceless existence.

The Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness, is nothing to do with you the world in which you exist.

From the standpoint of the Soul, the 'Self’, the world in which you exist is merely an illusion.
The 'Self’ is not within you, because the 'Self’ is not the body.

If the 'Self’ is not you,   then why think the 'Self’ is within you. Deeper self-search reveals the fact that you and the world are within the Soul the 'Self’.  A perfect understanding and assimilation lead to Self-realization.

Till you think you are an individual separate from this world you will remain in the realm of dualistic illusion.  The dualistic illusion is the product of ignorance.  When the Advaitic wisdom dawns, then the ignorance vanishes. When ignorance vanishes, then the duality never remains a reality.

First, the seeker has to know ‘what is the subject’ and ‘what is the object’.  Deeper self-search reveals the fact that”:  the world in which we exist is an object to the formless subject. The formless subject is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.

Deeper verification reveals the fact that the object and the subject are one in essence. That essence is consciousness.  Thus, the object is only an illusion created out of the formless subject.  The subject alone is real and exists eternal.

Remember:~

Sage Sankara: ~ VC~ All this universe which through ignorance appears as of diverse forms, is nothing else but Brahman (Consciousness) which is absolutely free from all the limitations of Maya.
When you finally realize the ‘‘Self’ ‘is not you but the ‘Self’  is the Soul then you will realize the world in which you exist is merely an illusion created out of the Soul. The Soul is present in the form of consciousness.
Sage Sankara: ~ VC~.63: "Without knowing and examining the universe, one can’t know the Truth, as the idea that the external world exists, won't go. It can go only by an inquiry into the nature of the external world.
Sage Sankara says: ~ “What is accepted without proper inquiry leads a person to the final goal. On the contrary, such acceptance will result only in evil, something which is detrimental to our spiritual progress.
Sage  Sankara says:~ VC-47 All the effects of ignorance, root, and branch, are burnt down by the fire of knowledge, which arises from discrimination between these two—the Self and the non-Self.

Finally when you become aware of the fact that, your ego, your body, and the world are one in essence then there is Self-awareness in the midst of duality.: ~ Santthosh Kumaar

To realize the false nature of the ‘I’, Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana is necessary.+

Only your intense urge to know the truth will take you to the ultimate end, but your accumulated knowledge will block you from realizing the truth hidden by ignorance.

It is impossible the seeker to discard the ‘I’ because they are stuck up with the idea that ‘I’ itself is the 'Self’.

In the past, some famous Gurus and their teachings glorified the ‘I’ people take it as a final and accepted it as the ultimate truth. Such acceptance without verifying the fact about the ‘I’, their journey is incomplete.

Blind acceptance and reverence for the guru will not help the seeker to get rid of ignorance.

Firstly, doubt about this ‘I’, how it came into existence.   There are no other means to the final goal is the realization of the source of the ‘I’.

There is a need to understand, assimilate and realize the false nature of this ‘I’, which appears and disappears.

It is erroneous to use the word ‘I’ for the 'Self’, because ‘I’ represents form, time and space whereas the Soul, the Self is a formless, timeless and spaceless existence.

Bhagavad Gita: ~ The permanent is always there, only the transient ‘I’ comes and goes.” (2.18)

To realize the false nature of the ‘I’, Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana is necessary.

The 'Self’ is not ‘I’, but the “Self’ is the Soul which is the witness of the ‘I’. Holding the Self as the ‘I’ leads to hallucination based on the imagination.

Those who are stuck with the ‘I’ based teaching never be able to cross the domain of the form, time and space.

All the Gurus glorified the ‘I’. Thus, it becomes very difficult to discard the ‘I’. Those who have accepted the ‘I’ based teaching refuse to accept anything other than their accepted truth. Till you hold the Self as the ‘I’, your knowledge remains skin deep.

The world in which you exist came into existence because of the ‘I’. The world, in which you exist cease to exist without the ‘I’.

Sage Sankara: ~ “VC~ All this universe which through ignorance appears as of diverse forms, is nothing else but Brahman which is absolutely free from all the limitations of Maya.

The seeker begins his investigation by inquiring into the nature of the ‘I’. Perfect understanding of ‘what is what’ will help the seeker to reach the Soul, which is the  Self.

If the universe is true, let it then be perceived in the state of deep sleep also. As it is not at all perceived, it must be unreal and false: ~ Santthosh Kumaar

Without the ‘I’, the ego, body and the world cease to exist.+

The ‘I’ is the cause of the bondage of the illusory form, time and space.  Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana frees the Soul from the cage of the ‘I’, which is an illusion.

Atman (Soul) is the 'Self’. ‘I’ is not Atman. There is a need to know what is this ‘I’ before indulging in the pursuit of truth.

Dualist sages including many sages and thinkers could not distinguish between ‘I’ and ‘formless witness.’ They hold ‘I’ as the witness. Their highest was the Jiva. One is so much attached to the 'I' that he does not want to think that 'I' does not exist. Again one is unable to detach the ‘I’ from the real witness.

The dualist object: - If everything else is false then the statement I am   Brahman is itself false, the but when one says nonduality is false, there must be awareness, and consciousness, behind the very statement. You will also go, die. One has to rely upon that which is permanent.

The Soul, the s witness of the ‘I’ alone is permanent. Anything that one says is a witnessed (waking), but there is the formless witness (consciousness) there before any statement could be made.

They mean the body by “I", but it is the Soul formless witness of the ‘I’.  The Soul is the real Self.  Theists dualists did not, or could not analyze further than ‘I’   on this point because they thought the ‘I’ is within the body and the ‘I’ without the body as the ‘Self’.

The ‘I’ is the cause of the bondage of the illusory form, time and space.  Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana frees the Soul from the cage of the ‘I’, which is an illusion.

It is foolish to say by getting rid of the ego the wisdom dawns.  It is impossible to get rid of the ego.  You are the ego.  The ego, body and the world appear together and disappear together.  It is impossible to get rid of the ego alone.

The ego, body and the world together are the’ I’.

Without the ‘I’, the ego, body and the world cease to exist.

Remember:~

The ‘Self is not the ‘I’.

The ‘I’ itself is the illusory bondage because the ‘I’ itself is the cause of ignorance.

Only in ignorance, the Soul is bound by the illusory experience of birth, life, death, and the world.

In reality,   there is no second thing that exists other than the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.

If the Soul is free from the ‘I’ then it is free from ignorance.

If the Soul is free from the ‘I’ then it is free from the dualistic illusion or Maya.

The Soul is free from the dualistic illusion then it is in its own awareness.

The ‘I’ is the cause of the bondage of the illusory form, time and space.  Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana frees the Soul from the cage of the ‘I’, which is the dualistic illusion or Maya. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar
